Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults

'This sweet baby is being fostered by me she is good with cats, likes to chase them and tries to play with them and she is also good with dogs. She loves to cuddle and loves to give kisses. She comes when told to and also stops if told to stop doing something. She doesn't mind baths either!' Jennifer Noe The Huntsville Animal Shelter recently reached a point where there was a strong plea to our area for foster placements and potential adopters to come forward due to the over-population of cats and dogs. The response was overwhelming so many of these new listings are in foster placements. This means they are receiving socialization and ... (Read More)training and are safe for the time being. Simply contact the shelter at the number below and have the id. number ready and you can arrange to meet animals at your convenience. Please read completely: FOR INFORMATION ON THIS ANIMAL PLEASE CONTACT 256-883-3783. BE SURE TO HAVE ID# READY. Animals at this shelter are held a reasonable amount of time so at the time of posting it is adoptable and not in immediate danger. However, the time period is limited depending upon the shelter population. Please note: THE SHELTER IS FULL. If you are interested in fostering, the need is great and we would love to have you. If you are interested in adopting me: 1) Write down my Animal ID # . 2) Make sure to mention Animal ID # when visiting or calling. 3) Remember all adoptions stop 30 minutes prior to closing time. 3) You will not be allowed to place a hold on me. 4) I cannot be shipped to you. 5) Before adopting me, you can spend time with me outside or in a meet and greet room. Please ask for assistance. 6) We take cash, checks, debit cards, VISA and Mastercard as a method of payment. **IMPORTANT: Huntsville Animal Services cannot guarantee that I will still be available for adoption as we do not hold animals for anyone under any circumstances. Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if I am still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt me, I will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where I will be spayed or neutered before going to my new home. If I am already spayed or neutered, I can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), a collar and personalized ID tag. Please know that a high percentage of animals in the shelter are brought in as strays. It is impossible to know anything about a stray animal and many times we can only make our best educated guess on breeds, age, etc. Every animal you see posted here has passed a general temperament test as performed by shelter staff and it is considered to be non-aggressive. ADOPTION FEES Dogs: $80 - 170 - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention; purebred dogs and puppies tend to cost more and dogs that have been in the shelter longer will probably cost less. Cats: The shelter is currently running a $35 special on cats. (regularly $80) - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention LICENSE FEES $10 - 1 year license $35 - Lifetime license EVERY ADOPTER RESIDING IN THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, AL WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE ONE OF THE ABOVE LICENSE OPTIONS AT TIME OF ADOPTION OPTIONAL SERVICES $10 - Heartworm test. Blood test known as the 'snap test' that shows when heart worm antigens are present in the blood. $20 - Microchip. Another line of defense to help you get your pet back in the event he/she is lost. This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. Start your new pup out right by gentle training and socialization. If you confront a behavior problem you are not sure what to do about, Laurel Rose is a dog trainer in Huntsville who has offered to meet with people who adopt dogs from the Huntsville Animal Shelter for a free evaluation. Phone is: (256) 890-1234. 'Pit bull mixes': Pit bull mixes get a bad rap. First of all, the American Pit bull is different from other bull dog breeds and yet they are typically lumped together. Many are actually American bulldogs, American Staffordshire terriers, boxer mixes, etc. And what percentage of pit bull traits gets a dog declared to be pit bull over whatever other breed he might be mixed with? But more importantly, the pit bull is more typically sweet natured and friendly when trained and socialized correctly. Please do not be turned off if a dog that appeals to you is labeled 'pit bull mix'. Come meet it. You will probably be pleasantly surprised and may consider adopting one of the most difficult dogs to find a home for, due to no fault of its own. Whatever dog you bring in to the family, all of the people need to be the pack leaders, whether adults or children. Follow this rule from day one, and no matter what dog you adopt, you'll have an enjoyable experience. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

Meet Pearl a very happy, friendly dog that loves to play. Her beautiful coat of grayish brown undertones gives her a very interesting effect, the look of pearlescent. She is strong, energetic and bubbly a combination that would prove to be too much for a small child, just right for an older one or an active adult looking for companionship or another dog her size she can romp around with. Pearl always wants to please and responds well to cues and looks to her human for instruction. She is a good girl that deserves her chance at a loving home. Please give Pearl a second chance.

Joe is a one year old gorgeous Black lab male, great with children and people and very friendly. He is good with other dogs large and small. He currently pals around with a 10 yr old lab and 2 small shih tzu. He lives with a cat, but does love to chase it! Joe would definitely be fine with underground or large fencing area. He is still pretty much all puppy and loves to play with plenty of toys and of course other furry friends. Joe has been to ... This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

He scares people that come to his Foster mom's backyard, but he does not hurt anyone. Webster gets along great with her many other fosters. She really does not know how he would be with children because she does not have any, but he has been fine with many friends that have been around him. Webster is quite a HANDSOME guy!

Hey there, I'm Hitch, a big ol' boy! I'm built like a couple of dog breeds like Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, and German Short Haired, but I prefer to be known as Hitch! I'm probably 6 years old, but who says you have to act your age? I'd rather act like a giant puppy than an older gentleman. I love attention and would like to be part of an active family. I can get real excited and forget my size and strength so probably no real little legged family members, but older kids would be great. I don't want to share my new family with another dog, I do okay with other dogs but I can be pushy if another dog tries to steal my spotlight too ... (Read More)much. Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi, my name is Delilah. I am about 6-8 months ago. My brother and I was lost and some nice policeman picked us up and took us to a shelter in Albertville, Alabama. They didn't have room for us and were planning to send us to doggie heaven but some nice lady with Southern Skies Labrador Rescue saved us and my brother was adopted and now I am living with a foster. She loves me very much but she can't keep me but she promises to find me a loving forever home. I get along with her kitty cat and I love kids. She is working with me to teach me not to jump up when we get excited but I am a very smart girl that has already mastered some obedience ... (Read More)skills. I love to snuggle and will always wake you up with happy kisses and smiles. I will enjoy watching you cook and are more than willing to help you pick up any food that you drop. I am already potty and crate trained. I never have met a stranger. I would love a home where I can be either the only dog or with another one like my brother who I miss. I enjoy playing in a backyard and being inside with my human, going for a walk or ride. Please consider adopting me! To adopt Delilah, please click here to fill out and submit an application: http://www.southernskiesrescue.org/adoption-application/ (Less)

This dog is a sweetheart, playful and friendly. But more importantly, the pit bull is more typically sweet natured and mellow (despite requiring regular exercise) when trained and handled correctly. Please do not be turned off if a dog that appeals to you is labeled ... (Read More)'pit bull mix'. Come meet it.     Hi there folks, my name is Lord Byron. Yep, named after the poet. I think I'm pretty handsome like the original guy but in a more doggy-friendly type of way. I am looking for a good forever home, and you don't even have to be a poetry lover. Personally, I'd rather chase squirrels than listen to poetry but that's just me. I'm okay with it too, it's just squirrels are way more interesting. I love romping around outside. Love Love Love it, so call me sporty! I'm cool with being inside too of course, but at times I can get restless unless you are rubbing on me. I need lots of exercise naturally being the sporty type and I would love to have a ... (Read More)doggy-friend to socialize with if at all possible. I'll be honest with you, I know basic commands, and what is the right thing to do and what is the wrong thing to do. However sometimes I'm just rather do what I want and so I think I would like to go back to school just to get more training. One can never stop learning you know. I was rescued as a pup roaming around until someone took me in. No one really knows what type of dog I am other than a Labrador mix and perhaps some type of Terrier, but the vet said Akita which the rescue certainly doesn't believe. Who knows I could just be an alien from Mars. I've been living with this poetry guy for about five and a half years but things are changing in his life and he realized that I needed a little something more than what he could provide, so now I am in front of all you guys! I would love to have a new home where there is a lot of room to run around and fenced yards are best with a buddy or two to play with. Like poetry, I can do without the cats...sorry kitties. And personally, I can do without young kids too. They just get all up in my personal space and who needs that?! Seriously folks contact the rescue about me and give me a chance! Lord Byron is in East Nashville. If interested in adopting Lord Byron get your application in now: http://www.southernskiesrescue.org/adoption-application/ (Less)

Hi .. I'm Madi! I'm 2 YRS old this month and have been in foster for over a year!! I am looking for my furever family.. Right now I live with my foster famly and they are GREAT! I have lots of fur siblings and 2 human ones. I do not always like new dogs , but once I know that they are okay with me, we are good to go. Because I'm still young I can be quite exubernat with my love and can play dominant with my fur fosters . It sure would be nice to have my very own family. I am up to date on my shots and have already been to the doctor so I won't have any puppies when I grow up. I love to play and sleep and then play some more! Can I ...     I am a very sweet girl who was found as a puppy wandering the streets. Someone quickly fell in love with me and took me home, but due to some unforeseen circumstances could not keep me and had to return me to the rescue group where I have been living for the past year. I love to play with other dogs, but i can get rough and loud, but it's all talk. I do not do well with small dogs or cats!! I am a very good girl and know some commands but am a little stubborn so you will have to work with me some more so that I remember what I am supposed too. I am currently about 2 1/2 years old and would love to find my forever home.

lnteresting Lab Trivia Low-Cost Alabama Spay & Neuter Clinics
Labs have very gentle mouths and can even carry an egg without it breaking. One rescue lab named Jake helped dig through burning debris at Ground Zero to find people trapped after 9/11, and later helped with rescue efforts after Hurricane Katrina. The Labrador Retriever is by far the most popular dog in the U.S. Labs are descended from St. John's Water Dogs. Labs became popular in nineteenth century England.
