Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Jamie! DOB 11/7/13 Jamie is just an amazing sweetheart that was abandoned in the Alabama. We brought her to Illinois to find her forever home and show her love. She has come a long way in the short time she has been here and is getting more confident every day. She is shy at first, but she really does want to please and once she meets you and finds you are not there to harm her, she begins to relax. She is adjusting well to a schedule, is crate trained (she goes right in), and she will snuggle with you in bed if allowed but when it's bedtime she wants in her crate! She had not been house broken at all and has caught on very quickly! ... (Read More)She is almost fully house broken'|you just need to watch for her cues. She's very quiet and doesn't bark so it took a little while to learn her 'signals' to go out. She paces by the door but if she is not seen right away she may have an accident. She is great with kids, has a 9 year old in her foster home, but is timid with kids at first. She would do best in a home with a fenced a yard and another dog to play with. She was terrified at first of car rides but now she seems to enjoy them! She walks well on a leash and loves taking walks! Most of all, she is super loveable....not an ounce of aggression at all'|just wants someone to love her! She will need another playful canine to live with and a fenced yard. Standard adoption fee is $295 (cash or check) and includes spay/neuter at our participating vets, immunizations/shots up to the point of adoption, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family to approve an adoption. Please email Kathy for an application at safehavendogs@yahoo.com. Please consider becoming a foster home while you search for your new best friend. We need foster homes - pounds are overflowing with puppies and adult dogs that are at-risk and need help. We can only rescue as many as we have foster home commitments. Fostering is a rewarding experience for your family. (Less)

I've got a question... which do you like more: my big, contagious smile? Or my undeniably adorable head tilt? Either way, I have no doubt that I'm a truly precious fella! My name's Superman, and I'm a 9-month-old Mastiff mix. I am housebroken and good with kids and other pets. I'm only at SCAC because the daughter in my previous family was allergic to me. Health: Spayed, Abused/Neglected

Fun loving, active, approx. 2 year old spayed female. We took her in because her owners could no longer keep her but we cannot keep her as we have 3 dogs already. She gets along well with other dogs and is very social but she doesn't really have manners yet - we have been working on some basic commands. She needs an active home, preferably with a yard where she can run. We are not sure what breed she is but the vet seemed to think she might be mixed with greyhound or whippet, she loves to run and is very fast. No adoption fee required, just want her to go to a good home. If you are interested in meeting Ginger please contact Valerie ... (Read More)847-436-4181 (Less)

Hi my name is Bear! I am a sweet black lab/Chow mix an older gal looking for a new home. Through no fault of my own my Mom has fallen on hard times and cannot properly care for me. It's breaking her heart but she must find me a new home so I don't have to go to a scary shelter. She has called many family, friends and rescue groups but they have not been able to help us. I am a good girl but prefer to be the only dog in the house. I haven't been around kitties so I'm not sure if we would get along or not? My Mom doesn't have children and I haven't been exposed to many but I'm sure I would like them. I am spayed and UTD on all my vaccinations. ... (Read More)I don't need training like a puppy I am house broken and know all my basic commands so my manners are very good. Lots of people say black dogs are the hardest to adopt or find new homes but I know the people looking on here are much smarter then that and know black dogs are just as awesome as any other color!!     JC came from a high kill shelter, found as a stray. He was a volunteer favorite and quickly made it to the adoption floor. After 5 months on the adoption floor his time was up and the volunteers begged us to take him. Since we didn't have a spot for him at the time, one of our cat fosters volunteered to take him in until we found a place. He was in that home with cats, dogs and teenagers and did great. From there he went to live with a wonderful couple but when they broke up, he became a pawn in the separation and we had to move him out of there. He is currently boarding with one of our trainers and is doing GREAT. He is approximately ... (Read More)3 years old, fully vetted, housebroken and eager to find a permanent family of his own.     Our Baby Boy Baxter was pulled from a local kill shelter. He was found as a stray. The time he spent at AC broke him, he was fine the first few days but his stay took a toll on him. He put his head in a corner and refused to come out or look at anyone. Took a lot of coaxing to get him out of his cage but one we did he was happy to run out of AC. Baxter has separation anxiety - cant be left alone. We are hoping to find a Vet with PTSD and turn him into the ultimate therapy dog. He is low key, supper affectionate, gets along with everything and everyone. He is housebroken but stresses in a crate. If he is crated and left alone, he ...     Coco was found in an abandoned building. She was pretty sick and there was evidence that she had puppies but they were gone by the time she was found. She has since been fully vetted, had some obedience training and lived with a family until recently. Sadly their dog kept attacking Coco, we pulled her the minute we found out. Despite her rough past, this girl is super sweet. She loves people and has lots of love to give. At this time we would like to find a home with an older, calm dog or no dog at all - this poor girl has been through enough hell and deserves a home and family that will shower her with love. Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

I do medical house calls for patients throughout Chicago. Today one of my patients told me he is moving tomorrow and he will have to put his dog down because he cannot take her to the assisted living facility he is moving to. I almost broke into tears. I cannot take her because my dog is not always good with other dogs. This very sweet, lovable girl is 13 years old, although I would have guessed 8-9 years old based on her spryness. Very good looking dog for 13, appears very healthy, gets around without any difficulty. And she is VERY sweet! I am confident she has another couple of good years in her at least. Not sure how she is with ... (Read More)other dogs, owner feels she is ok with some and not with others, as I would guess most dogs are. Very sweet with people, not sure about kids though since she is getting on in years. She is currently living with a senior citizen with whom she has been since a pup. She is not very high energy, and is of course house trained. So she may be perfect for an active elderly person who could use companionship. She currently lives with a cat as well, so I would assume she is OK with them. I believe she is current on vaccinations, but don't have any records at this point since this is such short notice. I don't have any pictures, didn't think to take one when I was at the patient's house, but she is probably 20 inches at the shoulders, a tiny bit overweight, she is black, thus the name 'Midnight', not too much grey, very cute face, very spry. She is a lab/pit mix and her face is a combination of the two, coat is short like a pit, but all black. Time is of the essence, even a short term foster arrangement would save this dog and allow a few more days or weeks to find a potential home. You can contact me as there are obvious HIPAA violations in giving a patient's contact information to the public. I will be in contact with the owner in the morning, hopefully with some sort of good news. Please help if you can or maybe provide another resource to try. Thank you! (Less)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Harley was dumped on the side of the highway in Alabama with his sister Hailey. Harley is ALL boy. He is sweet and smart but also a rambunctious young pup. He is beginning to learn about walking on a leash and is picking this up fairly quickly. If he feels that the other dogs in his foster family are getting too much attention, or he feels like he needs more attention, he will 'mouth' which means he puts his mouth gently on you to get attention. He is being taught not to do this, but is still working on it. Some breeds of dogs are genetically inclined to use their mouths to do a job, and he is doing just that. Harley is a bit of a climber ... (Read More)and has climbed a 4 foot fence, but has done well in a 6 foot fence. He is naturally very curious in the house moves from room to room checking it out. He has started crate training and learning house manners. Since he is a smart boy, he is catching on quickly. He is great with other dogs and is also good with cats. Harley is available for our Foster to Adopt Program. Fostering-to-adopt is a great way to see if a dog is right for you and your family. If approved, Safe Haven Dog Rescue foster families have the first option to adopt. Fostering is a very rewarding experience! Not to mention that you will be helping us save a pup in need! Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Peaches is looking for a family that loves hugs! She is a beautiful, mild mannered, and affectionate smaller lab mix! At only 45 lbs, she will make a great medium size family companion. Her name says it all this little girl is a true Peach! Cute, quiet, crate trained, house trained, walks well on a leash knows a few basic commands and she loves to give hugs and get attention. Peaches is approximately 2 years old, she is a medium energy girl. Since completing her heartworm treatment, she is healthy and her energy level has increased. Peaches, adores humans, so far there is not one she does not like and will walk up and hug anyone who ... (Read More)will hug her back. She likes and plays well with other dogs, and is very good with the felines too. She likes to go for walks and she loves to play ball. Her favorite place is anywhere you are! Even though her tail is always wagging, Peaches can be a little timid at times. She really wants to please and will look for approval. Once she is given an OK sign, her whole body is wagging. Sometimes loud noise or sudden movements will startle her, but is learning that she is safe and reacting less. Peaches would do well in a home with or without another dog to play with, but I think her preference would be to have a playmate. Older children would be best as she does like to give hugs and even though she is gentle and small she is strong. She does seem to be drawn to older children. Perhaps in her last home she had an older two legged companion. A 4 ft or taller fenced in yard is preferred, since she has the ability to jump a 3 ft fence. Standard adoption fee is $295 (cash or check) and includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, up-to-date on shots, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance.     Meet Gadget! DOB 11/15/14Gadget is a little bundle of fluffy love that came from a high kill shelter in Kentucky. We don't know her story or what led to her being dropped at a shelter, but we do know that she is the sweetest little girl you could ever meet. She is a true Heinz 57 mix however her short legs lead us to think she may have some Basset or Corgi in her. She is great with all children and adults. She is very friendly, social, and is catching on quickly to potty training. She really enjoys being with the other dogs in her foster family that range from very large to tiny and she would love to find a family with other dogs for her ... (Read More)to play with. We believe she would do best in a home with other canines and children. Like all puppies, she is full of energy and spunk one minute, the sleeping soundly the next! Puppies have special and require a home where there will be someone available to care for, socialize, and train them during the day. If your family is away from the home for several hours at a time, please consider adopting a 'teen' or adult dog. Standard adoption fee is $295 (cash or check) and includes spay/neuter when age appropriate at our participating vets, up-to-date on shots, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. We must have an application, conduct a phone interview, and meet your entire family in order to approve an adoption. Please email Kathy for an application at safehavendogs@yahoo.com. (Less)

Max is a sweet, snugly and chill, four-year-old, 46-pound, male black and white Pit Bull Terrier/Lab-mix looking for a loving guardian. Max's best friend in his foster home is a nine-year-old boy whose bed he shares each night. He's an amazing and affectionate dog who is full of tail wags and wiggles. He thinks he's a lap dog. Max is well-trained and knows the commands sit, down and paw. Max is perfectly housebroken and crate trained. His foster family crates him when he is not supervised as he still likes to chew on items like socks and underware. He has no anxiety issues; he can deal with fireworks, revving motorcycles, and other loud ... (Read More)noises. But, he does have a strong prey drive so he needs a home without cats or other small animals. While he gets along with other dogs for the most part, he does resource guard items from other dogs (bones, toys, or food). So, ideally he would be best as the one and only pet in the home. Max is being fostered in Chicago's Portage Park neighborhood. Max is extremely healthy, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped and heartworm-tested. His adoption fee of $200 benefits the rescued dogs of the Making a Difference Rescue.     Meet Bentley! Bentley is a two year old Lab/Pittie mix who loves to love. Bentley wants nothing more than to be a lap dog - he doesn't know what a big boy he is. Bentley likes other dogs his size when the chemistry is right - he's a young, active guy, so he wants a puppy partner who wants to play with him. Bentley has a beautiful deep chocolate coat and the smooshiest face; he's tolerant of being handled and could be a great family dog for an active, adventurous brood. Bentley is definitely up for anything!

Rachel Ray is a friendly, playful, snuggly, happy and affectionate two-year-old, 56-pound, female Lab/Terrier-mix with warm brown eyes looking for a loving guardian. Like her cheerful, dog-loving namesake, this Rachel Ray brings joy and enthusiasm to all of her activities, whether it's walks to the park, romping in the yard, squirrel-watching, playing with toys, or cuddling up with you in front of the TV. And it goes without saying that she enjoys a good meal. Rachel Ray is a super-friendly gal who loves everyone - including cats, and most dogs - and is full of kisses and tail wags for everyone she meets. She even sleeps in bed with her ... (Read More)foster mom. She loves toys and bones and rides nicely in the car. She also walks beautifully on leash wearing her gentle leader head harness, and has nice house manners. She is housebroken - however, if you're gone over eight hours, she will need a dog-walker. Rachel tends to get along best with gentle and mellow dogs smaller than herself. She is sometimes nervous around larger dogs so she's not a dog park or doggie daycare kind of girl. She's already beautifully trained; she knows sit, down and paw, and she takes treats gently from your fingers. She'd love to continue her formal education with her new family! To meet and possibly adopt Rachel Ray, please fill in the adoption application at http://www.magnificentmutts.org/DogAppForm/NewApplicationsDog.html and follow up on your application by contacting the rescue at magmuttsrescue@aol.com If you have questions for her foster mom, please contact Anne at almaclaren@sbcglobal.net Rachel Ray is healthy, spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, heartworm-tested and micro-chipped.     DOB 2/14/13 Piper was a stray in rural Missouri, a place where dogs are commonly left behind when the owners move or can no longer afford their care. Many of these pups don't make it, but Piper was lucky enough to be found by a compassionate soul that arranged for her to join our rescue. Our best guess is that she is a lab/husky/shepherd mix, but we are sure there are several other beeds that contribute to her beautiful 'fluffy' tail, stunning looks and amazing intelligence. Piper is very smart! She is potty trained, crate trained, walks great on a leash, knows all basic commands, and rides well in a car. She loves to play with other ... (Read More)dogs, go on long walks and run around in the backyard. She can also be silly and makes her fosters laugh at how goofy and cute she is. If you are looking for a pup that is well rounded and lively, Piper would like to meet you! Piper does not have children in her foster home and she does have the energy of a puppy. She wants to play with everyone and doesn't know that her playfulness might scare child that has not had dogs...she just wants to play! There is ONE thing that Piper does not appreciate...that is cats! So she would do best in a home without them. Piper is a wonderful, sweet dog that is looking for a HOME to call her very OWN!     DOB 10/20/14 Bella is our Boxer /Lab puppy has been described as very sweet, affectionate, cuddly, loves to be held and lay with you. She loves her one on one time and attention from her family. Also loves to play with other dogs, but unintentionally tends to play rough. Because of this she would do well as an only dog, or with another dog that can help teach her some puppy playtime manners. She has so far been indifferent to cats. She knows to Sit and Stay for her meals, along with Down, Shake, and High Five. She walks fairly well on a leash.     DOB 10/16/11 Meet Liz Picture doesn't do her justice, absolutely beautiful in person. Soft med length coat with a beautiful long fur on her tail. Here is what her foster family has to say about Liz: Liz has been with us since the last week of October. She is an amazing dog that has had rough start to life. She has learned that people can be good and has learned to trust. She didn't even bark until she found her voice in mid November. She has been with us through the holidays and has met many strangers to her and did very well. Everyone loved her and said what a great dog she is. Kennel - She is absolutely wonderful with her kennel. ... (Read More)She will go right in when told to kennel. We reward her with a treat. She goes in her kennel when she takes a nap and we leave the door open so she can go in and out as she wants during the day. We have let her roam the house with the other dogs when we have gone. Training - Liz is very trainable and loves treats as a reward. She is house broken and will stare out the door when she has to go. She walks well on a short leash by your side. I have not had her off leash since she arrived. We live next to a corn field with lots of critters and I know her hunting instincts could kick in and I wouldn't want her lost. She has chases the birds in our yard and is quite determined about the squirrels. Due to this, we are recommending a fenced yard. Since living in a house and trusting people is new to her, she is working on her manners. She might jump on people when she is excited. We also keep her stocked with lots of chew toys to keep her out of mischief. She buried every bone we gave her either in the yard, my couch or under the pillows on the bed in the spare bedroom so we give her a Kong filled with peanut butter, dog food, or cheese and she LOVES it! She will spend hours working on it. When she came to us she was absolutely fearful of the car. I have been taking her on short trips to the park and rewarding her with treats. We have moved to longer trips and she is doing WONDERFUL!!!! If given the chance she would love to sleep in your bed but will sleep in her kennel just fine. Liz will do well in a home with other active dogs. She likes to play and rough house with her canine friends so she will do well as an only dog or with others. Due to her great progress, since she has been rescued, we are recommending an experienced dog owner to continue working with her. The family that adopts Liz will be very lucky to have such a loving girl! Standard adoption fee is $295 and includes spay/neuter at our participating vets, immunizations/shots up to the point of adoption, fecal, deworming, frontline, 1st vet visit at one of our participating vets, micro-chipping and 30 days of shelter care insurance. Clint is the more dominant of the two but Buster, the submissive one, tends to start most of the scruffles. Clint would do fine as the only dog in a home. They are from a home that had too many dogs so they are used to being around other dogs and also other children.

This is Max. He may be the most silly and affectionate dog that we've ever met. He's a petite little guy. He weighs 50 lbs. and is around 2-3 years old. If you're a gardener, you can be sure that your yard will never be infested with feral cats, squirrels or rabbits. He loves to play in the mud...but never fear, he's figured out how to jump into the tub on his own free will to have his feet and muzzle cleaned. If you have kids...he will easily fit in. He's a great disciplinarian. He will teach your kids to pick up after themselves quickly if they cherish their balls, legos, socks and underwear. No mouthiness from this one...just too many ... (Read More)slobbery kisses. He loves to sleep in and insists on spooning you in bed. He's mastered the art of playing dead and will not budge from his spot until you physically move him. He is quite the charmer and fancies himself a lap dog. Just like a baby, he will wrap his arms around your neck and schnooze on your shoulder. Max also loves to go running with his person and will keep up with speed and match strides for slow down periods. He does very well meeting strangers. He has no anxiety, noise or separation issues. He's very low maintenance. He's house broken, neutered, HW negative and up to date on vaccinations and preventatives. He must be crated for his safety when left at home. He can not be in a home with cats or small rodents. He has an extremely high prey drive and the ability to jump over low gates and fences. Unless his forever home is in a condo setting where he will be walked daily, he will require a home that has a 6ft high privacy fence and he can never be left outside unattended. We have discovered that he will resource guard bricks and rocks. Although he can be easily distracted from these items through positive reinforcement, he will require a dog savvy person who is willing and able to work with this behavior. He can not have any bones. Max is located in Chicago. We ask that inquiries be within 30 miles of Chicago. Please remember we can not adopt out of state because a home visit is a requirement. We require an at home evaluation and screening prior to adoption. We do this to ensure that our animals will go to safe forever homes. If you are interested in providing Max a forever home, please fill out our adoption survey here http://makingadifferencerescue.com/adoption-survey/ This will expedite your inquiry as we are not able to return phone calls or emails during business hours. Lab Mix    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Blind

Thunder is a mellow and sweet, six-year-old, 60-pound, male, glossy black and white Lab/Pit-mix looking for a loving guardian. Thunder was rescued from the pound in Gary, Indiana. He had a bump on his head, and an injury to one of his rear legs. It's guessed that he had been hit by a car. Thunder can't see that well; he has 15% vision in one eye and 6% vision in the other. Since he's almost blind, it's not surprising that he is easily startled by someone sneaking up on him. But amazingly, he still loves to play fetch. He will listen for the ball to bounce and go in that direction. He's also quite the lap dog and loves to cuddle. Thunder ... (Read More)is living in a foster home where he has proven great with dogs of all sizes as well as cats. He is not crazy about overly playful dogs. But, he is great with a dominant male German Shepherd that typically does not like other males, but he accepts Thunder into his pack. Because of his vision problems, Thunder sometimes bumps into other dogs or lands on them if he jumps down off of a bed or couch. Most dogs are understanding of his clumsiness, but some dogs may not be. He is great with people of all ages including children, however toys on the floor are confusing to him as he memorizes his environment so he can get around. When he goes to a new foster home, he immediately tries to figure out the path to the door and has been housebroken wherever he goes when taken out regularly. He is also crate-trained. He is great on leash, at the vet and in the car. He is full of tail wags and kisses for the people he loves. He knows the command sit and does so automatically when he smells a treat or hears the crinkle of a treat bag. He is food-motivated and takes treats gently from your fingers. He's looking for a quiet home where someone can keep him on a solid routine. Thunder is neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm-tested and on preventative. And, even though the rescue group spent over $3,000 on his vet care '| his adoption fee is only $200. To meet and possibly adopt him, please contact Melia at melia88@comcast.net or 708-224-1900. He is currently living in a foster home in Round Lake, Illinois. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 13-07-17-00104Tide (male)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Are you an athletic person who loves a nice solid outgoing dog? Tide is a very handsome boy, weighs about 70 pounds, about 1 year old, heartworm negative and current on all shots and health care. He is a very solid, fun loving, energetic dog who can wear out any dog here playing, except a pit mix we had who is also higher energy. At the same time when crated he is perfectly well behaved, quiet and calm. He loves to sniff about and seems to have potential for a search and rescue dog or something to use his skills to advantage. Plus he is a very confident dog and loves to hop in the car, or go anywhere you want to go which would be perfect for ... (Read More)a working dog. He is crate trained, never potties in the crate or kennel. He was rescued from a very high kill shelter in AL, where many dogs never make it out. I seen his face and just didnt want him cut short when hes still a pup with SO much potential! He will need exercise to be a good dog, either playing with another dog (med or large he loves to rough house with them!) or jogging, agility, tagging along a bike. This dog is athletic and needs an active family, no couch potatoe here (although after play time I am sure he would love couch time!!) He knows sit and he loves attention. His favorite thing other then playing is to flop over on his back so you can rub his belly! He wants to meet anyone who has visited and so many people have been very impressed with how handsome he is, but they were wanting a small dog. I havent worked with him much at all but he does learn fast! Please email for more photos he is solid built and acts very much like a lab! Contract and vet reference required to adopt. A friend has sponsored half of his adoption fee of $200. to help him find a great forever home! (Less)
