Rescue Me ID: 18-02-23-00178MICA (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

MICA was saved from a high kill shelter in Texas, where dogs generally have just 3 days to be saved before they are killed for space. Mica is spayed, core vaccines, rabies, de-wormed, heartworm tested negative and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 7 February 2015 and at the time of rescue in February 2018 weighed around 50 pounds. Mica has been listed as an German Shepherd mix, however, we are not able to say for sure what breed she is, it is up to you to look at her pictures and decide what you think she looks like. At the shelter Mica was with a German Shepherd named Glory who was extremely fearful and had bonded with ... (Read More)her and felt safer being with Mica. When Mica was not with her she would cower at the back of her kennels, but Mica gave her confidence. So of course we saved Glory the same time as Mica and brought them both up to the rescue. Since being at the rescue Glory has gained in confidence, she is in a pen next to Mica and they have playtime together and are so very happy with each other. Mica since being at the rescue is totally loving life, she loves to play with toys, chew on hooves and horns, wrestle and chase with Glory and the other dogs and get lots of love and cuddles as much as she can. Mica is high energy and she feeds of the excitement of the other dogs, but does calm down and settle after a while. She is a great girl who has never shown any kind of aggression in any way. When out of her pen she will run up and down the kennels saying hi to her friends and then will run out to play outside and burn off some of that excess energy. Mica does use the dog door to go out to do her business or enjoy the fresh air in her run. I do not know if she would let you know she needs to go out since she has 24/7 access to the outside, but she is extremely smart and do not think it would take long to learn. Mica is great with other dogs and is happy to run around chasing and wrestling. She has not shown any sign of aggression at all. We do not have cats or livestock at the rescue so cannot comment on how she would be near or around them. She needs an active family, I have not seen her with children, but her demeanor and personality I have no doubt that she would be great with them and a lot of fun too. As with all rescue's she needs guidance and training and we recommend families go through at least the basics of training with her themselves so that boundaries, personalities and body language can be learned from each other. 'We do not recommend dog parks for several weeks, if not months, it is so very important for families and dogs to form a strong bond and get to know each other before exposing them to the potential dangers of dog parks. Although all GaDaH dogs are very well socialized with other dogs, lots of other dogs have not had the benefit of this socialization and do not always know how to play and act with other dogs. You also do not know the control the other families have over their dogs and you should always have a good recall for your adopted dog before going to dog parks. MICA is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550. We would LOVE to adopt her with her best buddy GLORY, if you are interested in giving both of these girls a wonderful home, please email me. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. If you feel that you have the heart and home to give this precious soul a wonderful life, please go to our website, under the APPLICATION tab, complete, then submit the APPLICATION. Our process takes around 2-4 days, and ensuring your references are aware that we will be calling, could speed up the process. Once you have been approved, we discuss any questions in regards to the dog you are wanting to adopt, then you complete and submit the contract, make payment and then we can work out the pick up / transport arrangements. Please do NOT submit an application if you are not looking to take home a new best friend within the next few weeks. http://www.giveadogahome-sanantonio.org MICA is located at the rescue in Sebec, Maine. We post in various states along the east coast and Canada where we have had lots of successful adoptions to enable more exposure for these beautiful saved souls. Families will need to be prepared to travel to the rescue to meet and take home their new best friend. Sebec is located just outside the towns of Dover-Foxcroft and Milo (approx 8 miles) and approx 45 miles from Bangor. There are also lots of hotels, motels, pet friendly accommodations and wonderful camp-sites for the more adventurous families and what a great way to get to know your new best friend. If there are options to arrange transport, we will work with you to make it happen. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-08-15-00259ADA (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

ADA was saved from one of the shelters we work with in Texas. She is spayed, rabies, core vaccines, heartworm and tick disease tested negative, de-wormed and micro-chipped. She has an estimated date of birth of 26 May 2017. ADA has been listed as a GSD mix. Ada was only a month old when she was saved with her mother and sibling, both were pure white, with blue eyes. Both her mother and sibling have been adopted. Ada, having grown up around lots of dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes is extremely well dog socialized. She is an active girl and she loves to play, chase, wrestle and have fun. As a pup she was very shy and didn't like to be ... (Read More)touched, but she has developed into a very loving, affectionate girl, who will find the smallest spot on the bed and make sure she can fit in it, just to be close. She will cuddle on the couch, but also is content lying on a dog bed. Since we don't time to train dogs at the rescue Ada is going to need a family that will spend the time and work with her, she is well behaved and does have good manners, but she needs to learn boundaries and her new families expectations and rules. She is very responsive and I believe once trust has been established, training will be fun and rewarding for both her and her family. She can be shy of people initially, but given time she warms up quickly and just loves to love. Ada has not been on a leash, although we are going to try and work on that if time permits, but the family must expect to have to work with her on that. She is going to need a family that is sensitive to the fact that all she has known is a high kill shelter and then the safety of the rescue, so it is going to be a big transition for her. Having another dog in the family would be a huge benefit for her, but an active, loving family is the priority in this wonderful girls perfect match. Ada has never shown any kind of aggression with dogs or humans, she is good with kids, and just like with adults she will most likely be a little wary to start with. Ada does use the dog door to go outside to do her business although she will not know to let you know if she needs to go outside. Ada is young and high energy and so a family with an active lifestyle is a must. She would benefit from lots of road trips and adventures, hiking, trips to the lake, the beach and anywhere that she can burn off some of her energy and enjoy the sights, smells and sounds the world has to offer. She will need a family that understands the importance of training and we encourage all families to work on basic and advanced training as a family so that boundaries and expectations can be set and both Ada and her humans can learn each others body language and personalities and form a stronger bond and understanding of each other. She has not had a collar or leash on and so leash training will definitely need to be worked upon. A family that understands her initial caution of people and new places, that will help her develop her confidence and trust. Ada is available for adoption from Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $550. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed. Rescue Me ID: 17-04-23-00222ERNIE (male)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered

ERNIE was saved from a shelter in Texas. He is neutered, rabies, core vaccines, de-wormed, heart-worm and tick disease (SNAP 4DX) tested negative and micro-chipped. He has been estimated date of birth of 12 August 2015 and weighs around 36 pounds. We do not know what breed Ernie is although he does have some resemblance to the 'American Blue Lacy' dog. When Ernie first got to the rescue he was very fearful of people and it was clear that he had been abused. Within a short time he started to decompress and relax and realize that not all humans are bad. He has come out of his shell and is an extremely affectionate, loving boy. Ernie is a ... (Read More)very sweet boy, who is non-imposing and will wait patiently for your attention to give him some love or a belly rub or treat. Ernie walks great on the leash, he rides great in the car, he is house-trained and is a gentle soul. He is good with other dogs, and likes to run and chase with his friends. He is not a dog that enjoys chasing around with lots of dogs, but prefers his few select friends. When Ernie wants some quiet time, he will go into another room or find somewhere quiet to relax and chill out. He takes treats very gently, knows some basic commands and is very well mannered. Ernie does not have an alpha personality and will be submissive to a strong alpha dog, although I do believe that with a submissive dog he would step up and take the more dominant alpha role and be very comfortable doing so. We do not have cats in the rescue so are unable to comment on how he would be around them. He doesn't show any interest in the birds or squirrels we feed on the front porch and he is great with the small dogs and puppies when we have had them in rescue. Ernie was adopted out in 2017, but sadly after 3 months had to be returned to the rescue. He did not like the 21 year son in the family and had become dominant in the family, barking and lunging whenever the son came in. This behaviour wasn't dealt with in a way that Ernie would understand it wasn't acceptable and so he felt that he was in charge of his family and home and became protective. Since being at the rescue, Ernie has not showed any sign of aggressive behaviour, other than once when he had only been back a few days and a friend came in and he started barking. I immediately told him NO and instructed him to go outside in which he did immediately. After a few minutes he pushed his head through the dog door and I then invited him back into the house where he went up to my friend and stood beside them waiting patiently to be petted. Ernie is going to need a family that is aware that he needs a strong alpha family who ensures he knows that he doesn't need to be in charge as the humans are there for that, something he has no problem understanding here at the rescue. He needs a family that understands any sign of negative behaviour needs a consequence so that he can learn what he is doing is wrong and not acceptable. Removing him from the room or location is and has been very effective. Ernie can get jumpy around sudden movements, which is no doubt from his abusive time in Texas and so it is important that his new family are always aware of this also. Ernie is truly an amazing dog, he always has a smile on his face and he is so gentle and loving, he just needs the right family environment where he can continue to learn and adapt. An active family that can take him on adventures and let him explore the world and all the sights, smells and sounds. ERNIE is available for adoption through Give a Dog a Home, German Shepherd Dog Rescue for an adoption fee of $500. This fee is not negotiable and is used to cover the rescue costs of pulling, vetting, health certificate, transport from Texas to Maine, monthly preventatives, supplements, food and anything else that is needed.     Lab Dogs can make good pets in Maine if they match your IifestyIe. Labrador Retrievers are friendly dogs that are popular in multiple countries as family pets. Labs are friendly, playful, trainable dogs. Labrador Retrievers need companionship and are excellent with children and other dogs. Most labs are too friendly to make good guard dogs.
