Animal ID: 7398Melodie (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi, I'm Melodie. I just moved to Baltimore MD after the great humans of OPH picked me up in South Carolina! I am about a 9 month old lab/border collie/grey hound mix (vet guesses) about 45lbs, who is fixed & up to date on shots. Unfortunately I have a cast on my leg & will probably have it 1-3 more weeks (11/9) very exciting news since I've been in it 2 months! The vet says I am healing very nicely and we are coming to the home stretch!! Once the cast is off, I have to continue to strengthen my leg, so I will only be allowed to walk on a leash (no off-leash activity/no running for a few weeks). How did I do that, you ask... well, you see, ... (Read More)I was enjoying the nice weather on my fosters deck & I saw our neighbor in the yard and I got so excited to have a human to play with that I started running and jumping around the deck, then I jumped so high I went over the rail and took a 15ft fall onto the yard. But I'm a tough cookie and all I got was a broken paw! - Don't worry I'm still a happy-go-lucky pup, & it's the cutest thing ever to see me hop on 3 legs! - I am still very much a puppy and love my play time and am almost always on the go! My foster mom says I'm the sweetest dog she's ever seen, but I keep her on her toes! I LOVE my people & follow them everywhere I can, and I miss them when they're gone. (It takes a few minutes for me to settle in the crate once they leave). - I'm still allowed to walk and play. I love other dogs and always want to play! I'm not supposed to run (because I need to give time for my paw to heal, but once I'm healed I would make an awesome running buddy and will need some way to get my puppy energy out! - I met a cat a few times at the vet & was excited to meet a new friend! - I take some time to adjust to new environments but I finally got the potty training down! I know what 'go potty' means & whine when I need to go out - but I rely on my humans and keeping me on a schedule helps! - I'm working on Sit, Down, Paw, stay! I recently learned to sit & stay before getting the 'okay' to move out the door before a walk, and am learning not to pull on a leash! I am also learning not to jump on humans, but I just get so excited! I am very food motivated! I came all this way to find an awesome family to be a part of. Someone who can play with me, cuddle, and take care of my leg until I'm ready to walk on 4 legs again. Could that be you? If you are interested in adopting Melodie, please apply today! (Less)

Bahama Momma is approximately 7 years old. Things that I have learned about her since fostering. -Lets you know when she needs to go out to go to the bathroom. -Walks well on a leash when wearing a harness. -Knows sit, shake/paw, lay down. -Still has a playful side. We've played with frisbees, ropes, balls, and squeeky toys. She only seems to chase and bring back ropes and frisbees though. *Seems to do well with meeting people out in public. He is learning how to accept love, you can tell he really wants to be a part of everything, he just needs a little patience and reassurance that he deserves the love! His foster home is still getting to know him so please check back soon for updates! OPH is partnering with the SAVEDOG Project, the Turks & Caicos SPCA and Old Town Pet Resort to assist dogs who found themselves displaced through Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Through the generosity of these two organizations, we were able to bring in these dogs and ensure they have a bright future! Old Towne Pet Resort in Springfield created a seamless transition for these pups from the shelter to their resort where the dogs are being cared for, evaluated, nurtured and prepared for their forever homes. The SAVEDOG Project provided transportation from the pups from the Turks & Caicos islands. TCSPCA provided care and vetting for every dog prior to the dogs' arrival. OPH truly believes that 'It Takes a Village' to make a difference in the lives of shelter dogs.     Harley will be 6 years old on 1/3/2018 and he is a Labrador Retriever prossibly mixed with a Great Dane (Labradane) - neutered big boy.. weighs 85 pounds but 90 to 95 pounds would be a healthier weight for him. When Harley was first rescued, we were told he was a pure breed Labrador and the family that owned him supposedly had AKC paperwork for him which we didn't see. However, we think he may have something else in the mix because of his size and certain aspects of his personality and temperament. Harley has been in foster care in this area for about two months now and has really learned how to share with the 5 other dogs. He is ... (Read More)learning how to play also! However, Harley would likely do best as an 'only dog' because he has some resource guarding around other dogs and is sometimes jealous when other dogs get attention. He'd rather be the star of the show and dominate his human's affection and attention. Harley is not a resource guarder with humans and you can take things away from him and he doesn't guard his food bowl. If there is another dog in the house, Harley's access to toys and food when the other dog was present would have to be carefully monitored and he would have to be blocked out of the kitchen during meal prep and eating times. His resource guarding is random and not all of the time but it happens enough that his kitchen time needs to be limited/monitored if there is another dog in the house. If there is no other dog then there shouldn't be any problems. Harley is NOT GOOD WITH CATS. Harley has been around children as young as 3 but not for an extended period (only a couple of days) and he did fine. However, we feel he would be best in a home with older children (12+) because of his resource guarding and he will 'mouth' still, especially when you are trying to put his harness or leash on or when you want him to move and he doesn't want to move. He is famous for doing the 'flop' when he doesn't want to do what you want him to do. I will not place him with a family that will be adding children in the future because he has already paid the 'baby price'. Harley is fully house and crate trained. He knows several basic commands and walks decently on the leash when there are no other dogs on the walk. If there are other dogs, he will pull more because he wants to 'compete' with the other dog. He is not leash reactive when other dogs are around but he will try to chase critters (squirrels, rabbits, deer) so you have to be alert and watch for these things so you can see them before he does. He is a STRONG boy and will require an experienced handler on walks. Harley is a wee bit of a spoiled boy. He learned early in life that he could do as he pleased so we are working on behavior modification and he's picking things up fast. He does try to test boundaries (like counter surfing or chewing on things to get attention) so he will need firm leadership and not a permissive owner. He will try to get away with as much as possible. Harley's recall is so-so and he could not be off leash at this time. He will need a physical fenced yard or to be on a leash when outside at least until he bonds with his new people and they work on recall with him. Harley would do best in a stand-alone home as he will bark when he hears things. He would especially love a home with a pool :) or on water where he could go for a swim daily. He LOVES to swim. Harley needs an active, physically fit family willing to walk/run him at least twice a day. He's getting about 4 to 5 miles a day right now. A family with a runner would be even better Up to date on vaccinations (combo, rabies, bordatella, Lyme), micro-chipped and neutered. Harley is also heart worm negative. We are looking to place Harley within a 3 hour radius of Washington, DC but will consider other areas if we have a volunteer available to do a home check. Application form: http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/E53LXc4bsw6r997fuK4 We have an application process, home visit, vet reference check and if close enough, a 2 week trial period before proceeding with an adoption if the trial period is successful.     Hi my name is Kilo, but you can change that if you want. My foster parents say I am a SUPER happy dog. I love everyone. I want to play and run, but I also love hugs, ear scratches and belly rubs. I'm housebroken, and good on a leash. My foster mom says I am very smart. I am learning to sit and down very quickly. I like toys to chew on but I have not chewed on anything I was not suppose to (and I've had a few chance to). There is a cat at my foster home, but he won't come to meet me. I don't understand why. I have not barked or growled at him. I just run after him so we can meet. I really want to settle into my forever home. I would like a ... (Read More)place where we can play and walk or even go jogging together. Mom says I am a great dog and all I need is exercise and training. I like that plan. Kilo is a 3 year old Lab/Shephard mix. He is housetrained and crate trained. If interested in adopting Kilo, please complete an application at www.doubledogdarerescue.org. (Less)

Luna needs someone patient and an experienced dog owner that will give her the guidance and direction that she needs. She was set up for failure at a young age, likely due to neglect, and needs a fresh start. Luna suffers from separation anxiety. She is skittish around new people and shows some aggression with new people until she warms up to them. She needs a home with experienced dog owners who have lots of time to spend with her & play with her. Luna is a very smart dog who needs some patience, understanding and forgiveness while she adjusts to being shifted around. An active person that can work on her training and building her trust is ... (Read More)what we are looking for for her. She gets along very well with the beagle in the foster home. We currently do not trust her around cats, kids, or other small animals as her prey drive seems high. Contact Rescue Angels if you are interested in meeting this beautiful girl! (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Lab in Maryland
Lab Dogs can make good pets in Maryland if they match your IifestyIe. Labrador Retrievers are friendly dogs that are popular in multiple countries as family pets. Labs are friendly, playful, trainable dogs. Labrador Retrievers need companionship and are excellent with children and other dogs. Most labs are too friendly to make good guard dogs. Labs can adapt to apartment life with sufficient daily exercise but do best with a decent sized yard.

lnteresting Lab Trivia Low-Cost Maryland Spay & Neuter Clinics
Labs have very gentle mouths and can even carry an egg without it breaking. One rescue lab named Jake helped dig through burning debris at Ground Zero to find people trapped after 9/11, and later helped with rescue efforts after Hurricane Katrina. The Labrador Retriever is by far the most popular dog in the U.S. Labs are descended from St. John's Water Dogs. Labs became popular in nineteenth century England.
