Or email citydogs@city.cleveland.oh.us About Our Shelter... CITY DOGS Cleveland is a program of Cleveland Animal Care & Control (CACC), located at 2690 W. 7th St. Cleveland, OH 44113. Public hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am-3pm, and Sunday 12-2pm. The CITY DOGS mission is to ... (Read More)increase adoptions from the City Kennel by changing the image of the pit bulls who make up the majority of the kennel population, by preparing all adoptable dogs in the kennel for lives in loving homes and by creating as many opportunities as possible for the public to meet and get to know our dogs for the terrific pets they are meant to be. Our Adoption Process... Here's a little about how things work: All of the CITY DOGS posted for adoption are available for direct adoption from the kennel, unless noted otherwise. A handful of dogs are only available for rescue pull, which can be for a variety of reasons. You can either stop in during our open hours to meet a dog, or set up a meet and greet with your dog, which allows us to get the dog out of his/her cage for some exercise before you arrive. To set up a meet and greet, please email us at citydogs@city.cleveland.oh.us. About Our Dogs: All available dogs have been assessed. This assessment is a snapshot of who the dog is at that given time. Our dogs are strays and we cannot make any guarantees with regard to behavior, temperament or health of any City Dog. We do not know what kind of home environment they were living in (i.e. with kids, other dogs or other cats), nor do we know if they are house trained. Everything we know about them is based on volunteer and staff observations. It is very hard to tell with certainty whether or not a dog will be good with kids, cats or another dog. If you have kids in the home or another dog, we do require that they be present for a meet and greet with the dog you are considering for adoption. Health/Vaccinations: Dogs that are adopted directly from the kennel need to go to your personal vet within a week or so of leaving the kennel. They do have their DHPP, Rabies and Bordetella vaccinations, are dewormed once and have a microchip. In addition, unfortunately many of the dogs do get kennel cough. This is not something that is contagious to people at all, but dogs that do have it will need to be on an antibiotic (Less)

Animal ID: 27116Bubba (male)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hello. My name is Bubba. I'm around 1 year old and I weigh about 70 lbs. I somehow made my way into a 'rescue' who had adopted me out to someone. The lady who adopted me really liked me, but I had seperation anxiety. Her dad took me in when it didn't work out with her. He really tried his best. He said I was an absolutely amazing dog when he was home, but he wasn't home all the time and I would bust out of the crates. Granted, they are not heavy duty crates, but either way, I kept getting out and it was just too much for everyone. Said 'rescue' that I came from wouldn't take me back, so he surrendered me here to the pound where I can ... (Read More)hopefully find an understanding, patient family with time to spend exercising and training me. I really am a wonderful dog. I am shy at first with new people, especially here in the pound environment, but I come around within a few minutes. I love going for walks and running around to play. I get along well with other dogs, though I can come on a little too strong and I can be a bit too much for other dogs, especially if they don't know me yet. I really, really love playing with other dogs. I need a sturdy playmate with a lot of energy to match my own. I am housebroken, but when I busted out of my crate I would have accidents in the house. Basically, I need my new folks to have a heavy duty crate to keep me in when they go away to keep both me, and their belongings safe while they're away. Once I learn that I cannot bust out of my cage, I stop trying. I don't try to get out of my kennel here at thr pound anymore. Once I learned that it wouldn't budge, I gave up and now I am just fine with the confinement. I am truly a very nice dog, I just lack training and confidence. If you think you might be a good match for me, please consider adding me to your family. Our adoption fee is $120.00. The adoption fee must be paid in CASH. We are unable to accept personal checks or credit/debit cards for adoption fees. ALL dogs/puppies adopted from our shelter will receive their parvo distemper vaccine, bordetella vaccine, rabies vaccine (if aged at 12 weeks or older), be dewormed with a 3 day course of panacur dewormer, be microchipped, receive their current Ohio dog license and will be spayed or neutered.     Hello! My name is Mocha. I'm around 3 years old and I weigh about 65 lbs (I'm quite hefty for my size). I was found as a stray in the Rogers area by some Sheriff's deputies. I was at the intersection of 2 very busy roads. I was lost and limping pretty badly on one of my front legs. They called the pound and one of the girls met them and picked me up. I was seen by a vet and had x-rays done. There wasn't anything broken. I also had a heartworm/ lyme test done and it was negative. The vet thinks that all of my pain is from a muscle in my shoulder, possibly torn or sprained. I am a VERY sweet girl. I love everyone I meet. I am wonderful with ... (Read More)both adults and children. I am very fun and playful like a young dog should be, but I am also pretty well mannered and obedient for the most part. I get along well with other dogs of all sizes as long as they're friendly towards me. I was definitely a house dog in my previous life. I never mess in my kennel or in the office, which is a good indicator that I am likely housebroken. I LOVE to curl up next to you on the couch and give you kisses too. If you're looking for a great dog to add to your family, please consider adopting me! ALL DOGS/PUPPIES WILL BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED unless a health issue prohibits the surgery from being performed. Not all dogs posted for adoption are spayed/ neutered yet.     Hello! My name is King! I'm approximately 3 year old and I weigh about 60 lbs. I was surrendered to the pound by my owners and I am now looking for a loving family. In my previous life, I lived as an outside dog, confined to life on a chain. As a result I have no real training to speak of and I was quite undersocialized when I arrived. I have been here for a short while now. I am doing wonderful and adjusting to a life off of the chain fabulously! I have been very friendly towards all of the people I have met! I'm just all kisses and tail wags! I am high energy and will require a patient family that has time to train me. I get along well ... (Read More)with most dogs and I'm a pretty playful boy. Sometimes I can go in a little too overbearing and that can scare the other dogs sometimes, but I haven't been aggressive towards other dogs. I have a big scar on my head from some old, unknown injury. It doesn't seem to bother me at all and I'm not headshy. There is really no telling what it is from. I also have dry skin and some mossing hair on my hind end, which is suspected to be from the fleas I had when I arrived here. Although I was never a house dog, I am a very clean boy! I do not have accidents in my kennel and I wait until I get outside to go potty. If you're looking for a great dog to add to your family, please consider adopting me. ALL DOGS/PUPPIES WILL BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED unless a health issue prohibits the surgery from being performed. Not all dogs posted for adoption are spayed/ neutered yet. If you're driving a long distance to adopt, please verify that the vetting process has been completed and dog you're interested in adopting is still available for adoption. The above mentioned vetting is all included in your adoption fee. The adoption fee and what is included in the adoption fee is NON-NEGOTIABLE. Adoptions MUST be done at the pound and in person as there is paperwork to fill out and an adoption contract that must be signed by the adopter. This means you must be willing to travel to our shelter to adopt. IF the dog you're interested in adopting has medical conditions or injuries which require medical treatment, we ask that you help with the medical bills so we can continue to help the dogs coming in who need additional vet care. We are a county run shelter, therefore we cannot control our intake or the health or behavior of the dogs that come in to our shelter. Although we try our hardest to place all of our adoptable dogs, there are certain circumstances in which any dog in our care could be euthanized at any time and without further notice (IE: sudden untreatable medical condition or injury, temperament or behavioral problems which may not be apparent when the dog first arrives, lack or space, etc.), therefore all dogs at our shelter should be considered urgent. The adoption of a more highly adoptable dog will mean more time for the less adoptable dog in the kennel next to him! Shelter hours are: Monday-Friday: 8 am- 4 pm Saturday: 9 am- 12 pm. The pound is CLOSED to the public on Sunday. There is nobody in the office on Saturday and Sunday, so therefore we are unable to answer or return phone calls over the weekend. Can't adopt a dog? We would love to have more volunteers who are able to spend time with our dogs! The dogs LOVE going for walks and the socialization and exercise helps make the dogs more adoptable.

COBY is a wonderful 8 year old, 68 pound black Lab mix male who was adopted from a shelter about 8 years ago, when he was just a few weeks old. His family had to move for a new job and was not able to find a place that would take a large dog, so they asked our help to find him a new home. His previous family had this to say about Coby. 'He is house trained and even keeps the barking to almost nothing while inside. He is very friendly and he loves children. We have a 6 year old that has grown up with him, and an 18 month old that is his best friend. He is very patient and will tolerate lots of poking, squeezing and love from the kids and ... (Read More)has never as much as nipped at them. Coby loves to run and be outside and play fetch with a tennis ball. He does a fair job at listening to commands such as come, sit and stay. He is friendly with other dogs and loves to meet them as long as they are friendly too. He is neutered and up to date on shots.' Coby tested positive for heartworm but his previous family has sponsored his heartworm treatment which he will complete around July 16, 2016, after which he will be ready for adoption and we expect he will be heartworm free. If you live in another state, don't let that stand in your way. We will work to transport Coby if it means he will have a good forever home. If you are another rescue group, we will waive the adoption fee but you can make a donation toward vetting at your discretion. The adoption fee will help to cover part of the cost of his veterinary care. (Less)

Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Needs Vaccinations

Charley is an approximate 6 year old male yellow lab. He is around 75-80 pounds. I adopted him from the animal shelter 4 years ago. Due to some recent changes in our household we had to move to a very small apartment. Charley likes to run and due to living in a small apartment he is not able to do that. I also work a lot of hours and I am not able to spend much time with him. He is completely house trained and does not use a cage. I just want him happy and for someone to give him a good life. He is a wonderful dog.

Hi there. My name is Baca. I'm 5 years old and I weigh about 55 lbs. I was surrendered to the pound, along with my friend Magnus, because my owner moved and couldn't keep us any longer. I am a very sweet and loving dog. I get along well with other dogs and I love people. I am a really good boy. I like going for walks and spending time out in the play yard with my buddy Magnus. I don't really play much with toys because Magnus is kind of a toy hog. The girls here at the pound usually put Magnus and I out in the play yard together to run around and play. We do play pretty well together and we have lived together for a long time but it is not ... (Read More)necessary for us to go to the same home. The CITY DOGS mission is to increase adoptions from the City Kennel by changing the image of the pit bulls who make up the majority of the kennel population, by preparing all adoptable dogs in the kennel for lives in loving homes and by creating as many opportunities as possible for the public to meet and get to know our dogs for the terrific pets they are meant to be. About Our Dogs: All available dogs have gone through the ASPCA SAFER Assessment. This is not something that is contagious to people at all, but dogs that do have it will need to be on an antibiotic. (Less)

Animal ID: 14216Bob Cornfoot (male)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hi there, folks! My name is Bob Cornfoot. I'm around 2 years old and I weigh 85.6 lbs. I was found surrendered to the pound by my (new) owner because I didn't mix well with the other dogs they had. They had a really annoying puppy that just wouldn't leave me alone. I didn't want to bite the puppy, but he just wouldn't leave me be. They only had me for 2 days and wouldn't keep the puppy away from me. I was in a strange environment with strange dogs and strange people. I was not comfortable yet. I really tried to be a good boy! The people even said that I am potty trained and I was good with their kids. I am great with the other dogs that I ... (Read More)have been around here at the pound. I would be especially good with a dog that is calmer and quiet. I don't really like all of the commotion and crazy puppy shenanigans. If you currently have any other dogs, I need to meet them prior to adoption to make sure we get along well. I am a very big, very strong fellow. My family will need to be able to handle my strength. It is highly advised that my new family gets in touch with a trainer to help me with leash manners if they don't know how to work with me. I don't know any better and I will drag you all over the place. I am a really wonderful boy here at the pound. When it is nice outside, I love being left in the large fenced play area here. I love lounging around in the warm sunshine in the grass. Though I can be quite a vocal boy when I'm playing or waiting on a treat, I tend to be very quiet in the yard. I really enjoy it out there even when I'm left alone. I usually just go get a ball and roll around or lay around with it in my mouth. I really love the big, heavy duty rubber Kong ball here. It easily withstands my chewing and has become my favorite. Maybe my new family could get me some... Anyhow, that's kind of all I can tell you about myself. If you think I would be a good match for your family, please consider adopting me! I appear to be in good health. I have been given my Parvo/ Distemper vaccine and I have been dewormed with panacur dewormer. I also tested negative for heartworm on 4/13/16 My pull fee for any approved rescue group has been fully sponsored by my friends Teresa and Karen!! Big sloppy dog kisses to my friends! PLEASE CONSIDER THIS DOG, AS WELL AS ALL THE OTHER DOGS AT OUR SHELTER AS URGENT. OUR KENNEL SPACE HERE AT THE POUND IS VERY LIMITED. THIS DOG COULD BE EUTHANIZED WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE ANY TIME AFTER MARCH 30, 2016. HERE AT THE COLUMBIANA COUNTY DOG POUND, WE TRY VERY HARD TO PLACE ALL OF OUR ADOPTABLE DOGS IN TO LOVING HOMES OR SEND THEM TO GREAT, APPROVED RESCUE GROUPS, HOWEVER, WE CAN ONLY KEEP OUR DOGS HERE AT THE POUND AS LONG AS SPACE ALLOWS. MY ADOPTION FEE IS $120 CASH, WHICH COVERS MY NEUTER SURGERY (WHICH MUST BE DONE PRIOR TO ME LEAVING THE SHELTER), MY PARVO/DISTEMPER VACCINE, RABIES VACCINE, DEWORMING, MICROCHIP AND MY CURRENT OHIO DOG LICENSE WHICH WILL BE HONORED THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF OHIO. THE POUND IS OPEN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY FROM 8 AM- 4 PM AND SATURDAY FROM 9 AM- 12 PM. WE ARE CLOSED SUNDAYS AND HOLIDAYS. (Less)

Lab Mix    Age: Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Meet Betty! Betty is a lab/shepherd mix, about 6 years old, who came to the shelter from a hoarding situation. We don't know how she is with cats, but she is good with most other dogs. She likes to play the chasing/pouncing game, enjoys walks, is good on the leash and loves to take in all the smells. She keeps her kennel very clean at the shelter, so we think she would be easily house-trained if she isn't already. She can be shy on her first meeting with new people, especially with men and children, but it doesn't take long at all for her to warm right up (treats always help :)). Once she likes you though, she LOVES you, yet she isn't clingy ... (Read More)and will happily go off to do her own thing as well. She would love to go to a home, perhaps with another dog, where she can go for lots of nice walks and snuggle on the couch after. Could you be her person?     Titan is a wonderful boy who LOVES all people and is great with kids. He is super-excited when volunteers arrive to walk him and loves nothing more than to sprint around the big play yard - although he is a middle-aged dog, he has the energy of a 2-3 year old! As much as he loves to run and jump, he knows his basic commands and always comes back when you call him to get some cuddles or sit for his treats.     Storm 1-2 year old lab/boxer Mix Female Storm is a 2 year old spayed female lab mix who is looking for her forever home! As most of her puppyhood was a cycle of getting adopted and returned to the shelter for being 'too hyper', Storm needs someone who can continue to teach her good canine behavior. Storm is a moderate to high energy lab who needs that special someone to help her learn what is inappropriate puppy behavior. After a long walk or letting her get her zoomies out in the backyard, she will settle down in the crate for a good while. She bonds very quickly and is very smart (sometimes too much!) and has learned the commands sit, ... (Read More)lay down, stay, leave it and come. However, she still has that boundless puppy energy and will jump/mouth new people in excitement. Once she bonds with you though and you show her your boundaries, she's very respectful and loves a good petting/brushing session. Like most labs, Storm is food motivated which makes training her much easier. She would be a great candidate for 'work' activities like agility as she loves to please. Once you get the treats out and start asking her tricks, she gets very attentive towards you. Her favorite toys are chew and rope toys. Storm is also house and crate trained. Storm does have a bite on her record - though as it was explained to me, the older couple that had adopted her were attempting to pry something out of her mouth. The couple did not receive any medical attention but Storm was still designated. Storm has not attempted to bite anyone while in foster, however, when excited she will exhibit puppy mouthing behavior which can be stopped by making her sit. Due to her size, energy level and requirement for continuing basic training, the foster recommends an experienced owner and a household with no children or cats. Storm shows positive interest in dogs, however is very pushy (much like the rest of her manners!) and until she learns to calm down more we recommend no dogs. Storm is looking for her forever home and her adoption fee is $200. (Less)

Phil can be slightly fearful & slow to warm with new people (especially men), but comes around wonderfully and is soon a lap dog, wanting to please, kiss and snuggle. Phil is a tender-hearted love bug who likes other dogs, and is very submissive. Phil likes to play with his toys, especially his chew toys, but his favorite activity is to snuggle, give love & affection. Phil is neutered, fully vaccinated, de-wormed and on monthly heart-worm preventative. His best buddy is LILLY (fawn-brindle female ... Rescue Me ID: 14-08-26-00558Walker (male)

Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

WALKER is a Chocolate Lab mix male who was rescued from deplorable conditions with fly bites on his ears. He was highly heartworm positive due to the fact that his previous owner left him outside and did not provide heartworm prevention. Walker was treated for the fly bites and underwent the fast kill for heartworm elimination. He is now happy and healthy and enjoying his life and freedom outside a disgusting outdoor pen and inside a foster home. He thinks he's a big puppy and wants to play with other dogs but he does not get along with every male dog he meets, especially if that male dog growls at him or tries to show dominance. For ... (Read More)that reason, we think he would be best in a home with a female dog or as an only dog. He is curious about cats and will chase them and we are not certain of what he might do if he actually caught up with one so, for that reason, we think a cat free home might be best. He is gentle with people. He seems shy at first around children and adult strangers and may give out a low, tentative bark, but he is very friendly and affectionate once you indicate the person is safe and once he has a chance to get to know them. He loves to play tug and keep away with rope toys. He loves to give kisses. The only things he hates are flies (and maybe male dogs who growl at him)! He wants to please his humans and seems eager to learn and easy to train. He is crate trained and house trained. He is 5 years old and weighs 54 pounds. He is current on vaccinations and neutered. If you live in another state, don't let that stand in your way. We will work to transport Walker if it means he will have a good forever home. If you are another rescue group, we will waive the adoption fee but you can make a donation toward vetting at your discretion. The adoption fee will help our 501(c)(3) non-profit rescue to cover at least some of the cost of the veterinary care he has received. (Less)

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Cassie is a beautiful Lab / Red Heeler mix female with a lovely, soft coat that she loves to have petted or brushed. She loves affection and seems to prefer women. She has reacted differently to various men so she would need to meet any men in the home prior to adoption or she may do best in a home with no men. She does well with children 8 years and older. We have not observed her with younger children but feel she would do well. She likes to run and play in a fenced yard but also does well with leash walking and jogging. She likes activity but is mellow and quiet when she is inside. She takes correction well and seems that she will ... (Read More)be easy to train. She loves to be with her person and can initially show some separation anxiety but has responded well to strategies used to ease her anxiety. She loves to go for car rides. She will jump right in as soon as the door is open. She has responded in mixed ways to other dogs and cats so careful introductions would be strongly recommended. She was observed being affectionate with a litter of puppies but played rough with a smaller, more timid dog. She seems to want to chase or play with a cat she sees outside, but seemed afraid of a cat she met inside. She may be best in an only dog home. Cassie is 4 years old and she weighs 44 pounds. She is spayed and current on vaccinations. She was light HW positive and received treatment for that and we expect no long term effects on her health. She is crate trained, house trained and can use a doggie door. As with most dogs, she will do best if a good routine is established and maintained. If you live in another state, don't let that stand in your way. We will work to transport CassyDee if it means she will have a good forever home. If you are another rescue group, we will waive the adoption fee but you can make a donation toward vetting at your discretion. The adoption fee will help our 501(c)3 non-profit rescue to cover part of the cost of the veterinary care she has received and a microchip. (Less)

lnteresting Lab Trivia Low-Cost Ohio Spay & Neuter Clinics
Labs have very gentle mouths and can even carry an egg without it breaking. One rescue lab named Jake helped dig through burning debris at Ground Zero to find people trapped after 9/11, and later helped with rescue efforts after Hurricane Katrina. The Labrador Retriever is by far the most popular dog in the U.S. Labs are descended from St. John's Water Dogs. Labs became popular in nineteenth century England.
