Lab Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Rudy is a sensitive three year old lovable 55 pound presumably pit lab mix. He has just completed heartworm treatment in a loving foster home sponsored by Shelter Friends a non profit charitable organization supporting the Heartworm Heroes Program of the Josephine County Animal Shelter. He was accepted into this program because he is a wonderful sweet pooch. Everyone who meets him loves him - truly he has a face that will melt your heart. He is an intuitive dog who is always there to make you laugh when you are feeling down. However, he should be a one dog home as he is highly food aggressive when other dogs are around. However, very gentle ... (Read More)with his human who can take his food away without issue. He's not keen on cats so no cats is a must. He has a high prey drive so a fenced yard is a must. He's not keen with stair cases that lead to the basement, but can do steps into and our of houses and up and down from high beds. Speaking of which, he loves to come and cuddle with you on the couch in the evenings and share your bed at night. Although he can get up and down a bit from the bed. He's highly food motivated and intelligent so would do great with training. If he's bored however he will help himself to anything that may be on the counter and reachable. He loves chomping on marrow bones and will have them down to nothing so be sure to watch that he doesn't eat the bone fragments. All in all Rudy is one loveble dog who will be a good indoor and outdoor dog for you. Please don't leave him outside all the time as he is sensitive and intuitive and needs his person. We think he would do very well with a person with PTSD as he will bond and be a wonderful companion. Rudy likes to get in the vehicle with you, but becomes quite nervous and seeks reassurance by wanting to be nearly on you. He also is not crate trained and doesn't appreciate being put in a crate (that's if you can get him in their in the first place). For those interested in meeting Rudy, we will put you in contact with his foster mom. If you are a Veteran- we also encourage participation in the Pet to Vet Program which will subsidize his adoption fee upon acceptance. For adopters within a 50 mile radius of Grants Pass, Shelter Friends will offer a pre-adoption visit with John Parrett a local dog trainer and behaviorist and 2 at home visits post adoption. Available at the Josephine County Animal Shelter, 1420 Brookside Blvd. 1.5 miles off I-5. in Merlin. With few exceptions Dogs are current on vaccinations, rabies, spay or neutered, and microchipped upon adoption PLEASE READ ENTIRE NOTATIONS BELOW. The most common question is 'Good with Cats?' If we know has lived with cats or farm animals will be stated above in biography. Otherwise- we don't know. If you inquire by email- please tell us about you, your family, your yard, other animals, children, and your expectations of your new pet and what your new pet can expect from you. When you do so, we can better address your inquiry. Shelter number 541 474-5458 Dogs noted as a Great American Shelter Dog are noted as such because we are not sure of the breed and can only give out best guess. See more at: www.savethewhiskers.org Alternate Contact Raleigh@savethewhiskers.org or text 541 660 6578 name of dog. It is always nice if you send an inquiry about a specific adoptable guest via email to tell us about you, your family and other pets, your yard, and most importantly, your expectations of your new family member so we can answer your questions appropriately as best as possible. Please, if you email an inquiry, please understand that these animals are in the shelter for a variety of reasons: Their lives are upside down maybe because owner died, they got lost, were abandoned, owner lost home or had a life event that left their pet in need of a new home. We don't always know how they will get along with all dogs, all children. Some won't be a perfect family member right away! They will need love, patience, a strong owner who will let them know what is expected of them and what they can expect from their new family. It may take an afternoon or it may take a week or so! But they need homes and families who will bring them back to knowing what family is! General Adoption Fees for Dog: Adult dogs and puppies- $125, Senior dogs 7 and over $50. Rescue Me ID: 17-04-09-00378Barley (male)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Barley one year old Newfoundland / Lab Fixed, microchipped, UTD on shots Barely needs someone with a lot of patience. Not just some, A LOT. Firm but not mean. He needs an alpha person and at least one alpha dog that will play and teach him. He LOVES, LOVES, LOVES toys. We have many and use them for distraction and refocusing when he is reacting to things around him. (this looks like deep barking) He has come so far in the weeks that he's been with us. He keeps being introduced to new people (at foster) and reactions are less and less. In public, he goes up to women more than men. Still counter surfing but every day seems like he ... (Read More)understands, even if just for a few minutes, he isn't supposed to be in the kitchen. He has a bit of separation anxiety, he doesn't like closed doors if you are in a room. If you are outside and he can see you but can't get to you, he just whines. His foster will come in, play with him, get him out back with the other big dogs and he's fine until he notices his fosters are gone again. He's a toy hoarder, thinks they are all his, (this is partly his age and partly needing and alpha to teach him not to do that) he can get a bit frustrated when the other dogs have one and he wants it. The fosters swap toys around all the time to refocus. He is just going to take time and guidance to be the best dog, but he's already on the way. (Less)

Meet Radiance! Adoption events are a snorey bore'|'|..I would rather be at my foster house rumbling in the backyard or snoozing with my stuffy toys. The humans call me Radiance. I am not sure what that means in human language, but it translate into like sparkles, so I will add sunshine to your life. I am a Boxer dog and American Staffordshire Terrier Mix . I am a pretty young thang at about one year old and only 35 pounds. I go to the adoption events to get adopted, but I am not sure what that means, because then we just go back home to my foster house. What does adopted mean anyway? I am doing lots of skills at my foster house to get ... (Read More)ready for adoption like learning puppy manners, cuddles, leash walking, chewing on nylabones instead of human items, crate training, and running around the backyard with the other dogs. I am still catching on to the potty training, but like most puppy dogs, you will have to teach me where the door to outside is at your house. I am a happy girl with plenty of love to throw your way. Do you think that I could learn about adopted with you at your house? I think I would be really good at it with all the training I am getting here at my foster house. Visit www.godsdogsrescue.org to adopt me. I am located in San Antonio Texas but can be transported all over the US. I come spayed, dewormed, vaccinated, and microchipped (Less)

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Long story, but I inherited the dogs about 10 months ago. I thought I could take good care of them, but it isn't working even though I've tried very hard. I'm 68 years old with knee problems. The 'boys' are just too much for me. They are young and need much more exercise than I can give them; they are able to pull away from me and have knocked me down several times. My house & yard are both small, so they are cooped up and restless. Both are wonderful, playful, loving, great with kids, get along with my cats, are trained to sit, stay and go to their beds. Needless to say I love them dearly, but on April 10, I will have knee surgery, which ... (Read More)will make it impossible for me to care for them. I don't know what else to do. I've tried to re-home them myself and have them registered with other organizations. Please let me know, if you can help. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-02-11-00191Treadmill Tara (female)

Lab Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Male Dogs Only, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

We have the big reveal for our girl Treadmill Tara! Tara a 1 1/2-year-old Pit Lab mix who was an over the top no manners 56 pound, spayed girl. She had absolutely no discipline. But she was loving and eager to learn. She is now ready for the big reveal! Tara is ready for a new home. What will be the best fit is perhaps a moderately mature leader with no children; no children is the order of the day as children tend to be unpredictable; perhaps a Veteran that is active and wants just a 'You and Me' relationship to take hiking, running, maybe fishing on the banks of the river! A person that is willing to learn to keep her mentally and ... (Read More)physically stimulated on a treadmill for 30 to 45 minutes a day- or even twice a day! She loves her treadmill. She has had some playmates- boys only- but can be a bit much - for them as she tends to play rough. So a just a 'You and Me' companionship really is encouraged. No small animals- maybe a goldfish would be ok. Shelter Friends, a non-profit organization supporting the Animals of the Josephine County Animal Shelter will provide the following: First- She would love to be the joint benefactor of our Pet to Vet Program. This program will subsidize her adoption fee. We look to offer follow-up support by providing a couple of one on one training sessions here in Grants Pass to teach her new leader Treadmill enrichment and direction and offer a gently used treadmill. Additionally, 3 visits with John Parrett, local dog behaviorist if adopted within 50 miles or one hour of Grants Pass. She will come with a new bed, leash, and starter bag of food. Treadmill Tara is seeking a dedicated adopter who will follow through and maintain the great progress she has made so she and her new adopter will continue to enjoy all each has to offer one another. These training sessions must be set in place immediately upon adoption to ensure a smooth transition for a long and full, life-long companionship. For more information please contact Raleigh 541 660 6578 or Laura Milnes at the Josephine County Animal Shelter 541 474-5458 This is what her foster guardian that gave her structure has to say,- 'and maybe a bit redundant,- 'Tara is an amazingly sweet, female about 1 1/2 years old and is a beautiful black color with a white chest. Tara has a real zest for life and is hoping to find someone with an active dog life that is wanting a walking, hiking, running type companion. As a special bonus, Tara has been treadmill trained so when life gets busy or the weather throws in a twist Tara still gets her exercise. This girl loves her treadmill time and will happily jump on requesting her 'workout' each day. Tara is current on vaccinations, spayed, crate trained, treadmill trained and has a good introduction to basic commands like sit, down, bed, wait and off. Although the first part of her life was not stable or structured and she ended up a little out of control and in the shelter. This incredibly loving girl has made some really positive changes and is ready to bring a lot of love and joy to her new person. Tara has been around other dogs and has had play opportunities with some well behaved male dogs but isn't usually a good match with other females. Not all dogs are a match for her as she plays rough. Her best fit would be a home as an only pet. Tara's ideal home would be a kid-less (she likes kids but her plays style can be energetic and rough and does best with the calmer consistency of adults) person or couple that is willing to continue Tara's training. She's had a great start understanding leadership and boundaries and needs someone to continue assuming this leadership role with her to help keep her relaxed and happy.' If you think you can offer Treadmill Tara- or Tara a loving structured home, please call the shelter or email so we can arrange a meet and greet here in Josephine County. - See more at: http://savethewhiskers.org/5045/tara/#sthash.nHJ93xGy.dpuf (Less)

Xena (aka Dutchess) is a young female bully mixed with lab we believe. She was rescued from a California Shelter. She is a little bit food protective and has a good amount of energy. Nala is an awesome dog and just needs a patient family or woman who will work with her. She loves her country walks and looks forward to them every day. Housebroken, knows basic commands, a slap happy girl who loves life, cuddles and hugs and will make a loyal companion for the right family. she has bonded really well to my personal chow-shepard mix so she will do well as an only dog or as a companion with a gentle male Nala is shy of strangers but warms up with trust. She starts out with barking and being concerned, but if you ignore the bark and put your hand out she will start licking you, then with some sweet words and a treat, she is ready for play and cuddles. Nala will make an excellent watch dog and will be sure to let you know when strangers are about. Nala does love living in the country and we would love to see her go into a home on land and where her family will take her for walks or runs in nature. Nala is spayed, microchipped, current on all vaccines and rabies. we regularly treat her for worms and parasite as a control. we would also like to see her new owners continue her training and enroll her in a very good dog behavioral training school (Less)

Hi there! I am Loyal LUIS! My story is a sad one. I was abandoned in boarding for years (4651 days and counting) and want a home so badly. I love to explore and swim (the lab in me)! I would be happiest if I was the only dog in the home and had my people to myself. Large fenced property would be a dream come true for me. A rural property away from hustle and bustle. I am great on the leash though and won't bother other dogs. I have been waiting so very long to be free of the boarding kennel. Could you give me a HOME? Love, LUIS PS: Here is what the two-leggeds say about me - 'Looking for a fishing buddy? Or maybe a dog to sit on the porch ... (Read More)with and watch the sun go down? Need a companion that is loving and goofy and won't care if you stay in your pajamas all day or don't do your hair or sing off key in the shower? Well, LUIS is your guy. He would love to have a home of his own, without any other dogs or kitties to share it with, just LUIS and his favorite people, hanging out, playing ball, watching movies and eating popcorn and then falling asleep and dreaming of doing the same thing tomorrow, and the next day and the next. LUIS has waited 4 long years, in and out of boarding kennels and shelters, to have the home he dreams of. LUIS is so ready to meet his best friend. Are you ready to meet yours? My human pals will drive me anywhere in PNW for the right home. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Lab in Oregon
Lab Dogs can make good pets in Oregon if they match your IifestyIe. Labrador Retrievers are friendly dogs that are popular in multiple countries as family pets. Labs are friendly, playful, trainable dogs. Labrador Retrievers need companionship and are excellent with children and other dogs. Most labs are too friendly to make good guard dogs. Labs can adapt to apartment life with sufficient daily exercise but do best with a decent sized yard.

lnteresting Lab Trivia Low-Cost Oregon Spay & Neuter Clinics
Labs have very gentle mouths and can even carry an egg without it breaking. One rescue lab named Jake helped dig through burning debris at Ground Zero to find people trapped after 9/11, and later helped with rescue efforts after Hurricane Katrina. The Labrador Retriever is by far the most popular dog in the U.S.
